BioMedBridges will construct an e-infrastructure to allow interoperability between data and services in the biological, medical, translational and clinical domains and thus strengthen biomedical resources in Europe. A major collaborative effort co-ordinated by ELIXIR, BioMedBridges will integrate data spanning the medical, chemical and life sciences. Its partners will develop the e-infrastructure shared by the other biomedical sciences research infrastructures on the ESFRI roadmap. Launched in January 2012, the four-year initiative is by the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Programme.
By creating an environment that allows data and service exchange in the biological and medical sciences, BioMedBridges will empower scientific research and its translation into industry, the clinic and the environment, to address the grand challenges Europe faces in the 21st century.
Ensuring access to relevant information across all biomedical sciences (BMS) research infrastructures will enable scientists to conduct and share cutting-edge research. Implementation of BioMedBridges will act as a major catalyst for realization of the European Research Area (ERA). This initiative will provide access to the all the BMS data and tools across Europe, allowing the full potential of research in all countries across the ERA to be realized and will propel Europe to the forefront of Biological and Medical Science research globally, while simultaneously improving Europe’s competitiveness in the BMS and health-related economies.
EGI.eu will contribute to BioMedBridge's Technical Watch workpackage (WP11), which brings together experts to monitor technical developments. EGI.eu will provide advice on how BioMedBridges can interact with other e-infrastructures, and on how current developments relevant to the BMS infrastructures can be adopted to catalyse the project's progresses.
