How do I join/start a community?

Typically, scientists and researchers use the European Grid Infrastructure by joining an existing research community – a Virtual Organisation (VO) or a Virtual Research Community (VRC).

If none of the existing communities fits the specific discipline, or matches the desired computing requirements, it is also possible to set up a new VO or a new VRC.

Here is how this works.

1. Virtual Organisations

a. How to join a VO?

  • Please consult the list of VOs and select which one is relevant to your research work (you can filter the VOs by scientific discipline, or by geographical scope).

  • Contact the VO manager. Each VO has different membership procedures and the VO manager will walk you through the process.

2. Virtual Research Communities

a. How to join a VRC?

  • Please consult the list of VRCs and select which one is relevant to your research work. Note that EGI is working to establish agreements with many other VRCs, not included yet in the official list. If you would like to know if there are plans to create a VRC covering your discipline, please email the EGI.eu user support (ucst@egi.eu).

  • Contact the relevant VRC. Each VRC has different membership procedures and they will inform you on how to continue the process.
