<p>EGI is proud to announce an agreement (SLA) between a group of service providers and the EXTraS project (Exploring the X-ray Transient and variable Sky).</p>
<p><a href="http://www.extras-fp7.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">EXTraS</a>&nbsp;is going to harvest the hitherto unexplored temporal domain information buried in the serendipitous data collected by the <a href="http://sci.esa.int/xmm-newton/31281-instruments/?fbodylongid=774" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">European Photon Imaging Camera instrument</a> on-board the ESA&#8217;s X-ray space observatory <a href="http://sci.esa.int/xmm-newton/31281-instruments/?fbodylongid=774" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">XMM-Newton</a>, in 13 years of observations.</p>
<p>Andrea De Luca, the project coordinator, points out that &#8220;one key goal of the EXTraS project is to develop software tools important for enhancing the discovery potential of ESA XMM-Newton, also because this mission is ongoing and therefore produces daily new data&#8221;.</p>
<p>Thanks to the agreement with <a href="http://www.egi.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">EGI</a>, EXTraS will be able to access&nbsp;<a href="/services/cloud-compute/">Cloud Compute</a>&nbsp;services needed for the project’s activities.</p>
<p>The EGI service providers involved are:</p>
<p>&#8211; <a href="http://www.cyfronet.krakow.pl/cgw10/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">CYFRONET-Cloud</a> (Poland)</p>
<p>&#8211; <a href="https://www.recas-bari.it/index.php/it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">RECAS-BARI</a> (Italy)</p>
<p>In total, the 2 providers offered 50 virtual CPU cores, 200 GB of memory and more than 1TB of storage.</p>
<p>Giuseppe La Rocca, Technical Outreach Expert at the EGI Foundation, facilitated the agreement and says: “This&nbsp;<a href="https://documents.egi.eu/public/ShowDocument?docid=2869" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">agreement</a>&nbsp;describes the commitments of two federated EGI service providers that will serve altogether the Astronomy and Astrophysics community, helping researchers to significantly advance our understanding in this scientific domain.”</p>
<p>Daniele D&#8217;Agostino, ICT partner at EXTraS, also comments: “The software provided through a <a href="http://portal.extras-fp7.eu/cms/home" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">web portal</a> is designed following the science gateway paradigm and based on the resources granted by EGI. This will extend the analysis of recent data and will allow users from the community to analyse their own data using EXTraS pipelines.”</p>
