EGI Foundation Expands Impact in Earth Sciences Through MoU with EPOS ERIC

EGI Foundation is excited to announce a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with EPOS ERIC, one of Europe’s foremost research infrastructures for solid Earth Sciences. This collaboration represents a significant opportunity for EGI to deepen its role in domain-specific research and further contribute to the digital transformation of Earth science in Europe.
EPOS ERIC integrates hundreds of data services across geoscience disciplines, and through this MoU, EGI will provide the federated computing power, cloud services, and technical expertise needed to power next-generation research tools for the solid Earth science community.
“Working with EPOS ERIC allows us to apply our services where they matter most—at the intersection of Earth science and societal impact,” said Tiziana Ferrari, Director of the EGI Foundation. “This partnership demonstrates how the EGI Federation can empower domain-specific research infrastructures with tailored digital solutions.”
What EGI Gains from the Collaboration
- Domain Engagement: Strengthens EGI’s presence in the solid Earth Sciences, engaging a highly interdisciplinary community with complex data needs.
- New Use Cases & Requirements: EPOS ERIC provides valuable technical requirements that will help EGI shape future services, particularly in federated identity management and scientific notebook integration.
- Co-Development Opportunities: The collaboration opens up possibilities to co-design and test services like EGI Notebooks in a real-world, high-impact context.
- Training & Outreach Synergies: EGI will co-organise events, workshops, and joint dissemination activities, enhancing visibility within the Solid Earth science domain.
- Sustainability and Long-Term Planning: The collaboration offers a testbed for long-term service agreements and scalable partnership models aligned with the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) vision.
This partnership with EPOS ERIC confirms EGI’s strategic objective to provide the compute backbone for thematic research infrastructures and to deliver tailored, FAIR-aligned digital services that enable scientific discovery.
