The EGI Foundation is excited to announce the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Galaxy Team at the University of Freiburg, the host of the European Galaxy instance.
EGI Foundation Signs MoU with the University of Freiburg

This collaboration represents a significant opportunity for EGI to deepen its role in domain-specific research and further contribute to the digital transformation of data-intensive science in Europe.
The University of Freiburg provides an open, web-based platform for accessible, reproducible, and transparent computational research based on the Galaxy framework. Through this MoU, EGI will provide the federated computing power, storage, and technical expertise needed to support the Galaxy platform and integrate it as a robust service within the broader European research ecosystem. The collaboration focuses on aligning technical requirements, improving authentication interoperability via EGI Check-In, and establishing a dedicated Competence Centre for long-term community support.
"This collaboration shows how the EGI Federation can support specialised research communities," says Björn Grüning, lead of the Freiburg Galaxy team. "By backing the Galaxy platform with our distributed compute and storage services, researchers can have a powerful, reliable foundation to tackle complex, data-heavy science."
Key Benefits of the Collaboration
- EOSC Integration: Integrating Galaxy into the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) via the EGI Node ensures the platform is accessible as a federated, production-level service, promoting it to new scientific domains.
- Service Development: The partnership provides EGI with valuable technical requirements to shape future services, particularly in workload management and data integration via the EGI DataHub.
- Future Sustainability: By coordinating efforts for future funding opportunities through the Horizon Europe Work Programme, both institutions are positioned to co-develop sustainable solutions that enable long-term scientific discovery.
Overall, this partnership reinforces EGI’s mission to serve as the computing engine behind Europe's specialised research platforms. With EGI's robust infrastructure and Galaxy’s accessible environment, the two organisations are ensuring that scientists have the reliable tools they need to drive their fields forward.
