EGI2025 – Day 3 Highlights

Digital Twins, Federated Infrastructure & the Compute–Data Continuum

The final day of EGI2025 in Santander offered a deep dive into how digital twin technologies, federated systems, and open ecosystems are reshaping scientific collaboration across domains and borders.

The morning plenary highlighted the achievements of the interTwin project, with speakers showcasing progress in building a European digital twin engine for science. With over 70 attendees, the session underscored the importance of interoperability, scalability, and domain-driven innovation.

Parallel sessions brought digital twin use cases to life, from real-time signal detection and climate modelling to 3D visualisations and emission monitoring. The community also explored cloud-HPC-edge integration, with talks on orchestration tools, data mining, and federated storage solutions.

A key session on federated infrastructures presented examples from Europe and China, including EGI service updates, AI-enhanced helpdesk systems, and cross-border collaboration through the Global Open Science Cloud. Thematic infrastructure talks highlighted national strategies from Poland, France, Portugal, and others.

The Closing Panel, “Infrastructures for Scientific Collaboration: National & Thematic Perspectives”, brought key reflections from across the week, emphasising the need for flexibility, trust, and community-driven governance in infrastructure development.

The day concluded with a celebration of community contributions:

Poster prizes went to Anca Hienola (FMI – OS-TRAILS) and Zdeněk Šustr (CESNET – New features in EGI Check-in).

We’d also like to congratulate Enrico Vianello, winner of the EGI2025 Photo Contest, for his delightful snapshot featuring one of the event’s much-loved penguins!

Special congratulations to Ana López Cudero, winner of the Whova Leaderboard Challenge, with an impressive 29,500 points for her engagement throughout the conference.

Thank You

A big thank you to everyone who made EGI2025 possible — our organising team, the programme committee, all speakers and contributors, and most importantly, the attendees. Your energy, insight, and collaboration are what make this community thrive.

See you at EGI2026!
