Project Launch: ENSURE Drives Environmental Sustainability Across Research Infrastructures

As Project Coordinator, EGI Foundation is proud to ensure the launch of a new coordinated project: ENSURE.
On September 1 2026, ENSURE (ENvironmentally SUstainable digital services and practices for REsearch infrastructures), has officially launched to address the environmental footprint of Europe’s digital Research Infrastructures (RIs). Funded under the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme (Grant Agreement / Call: HORIZON-INFRA-2025-01-TECH-01), the initiative unites leading research organizations, high-performance computing centers, and technology partners across Europe to design actionable, data-driven frameworks for sustainable digital science.

As computational demands, massive data generation, and advanced processing—including AI-driven workflows—continue to expand across scientific disciplines, the energy and resource consumption of supporting e-infrastructures has emerged as a critical challenge. The ENSURE project responds directly to this demand by developing standardized metrics, advanced monitoring mechanisms, and AI-driven predictive tools to help research facilities systematically track, model, and mitigate their environmental impact.
The consortium unites major ESFRI Landmarks, pan-European digital infrastructure providers, life science domain communities, leading research universities, and sustainability experts. This unique composition ensures scientific relevance, technical excellence, and broad uptake across disciplines from physics, astronomy, life sciences, and medical imaging to the whole RI landscape.
