UNCAN-Connect at #EGI2026

On the 24th of September in the context of EGI Conference 2026 held in Ghent, Brussels, Andrea Cristofori (Data Solutions Architect) gave an overview of the UNCAN-Connect project on behalf of the consortium, during the session Data Management and Distributed Research Environments.
The project is designed as a flagship initiative under the EU Mission on Cancer, is a 60-month project and aims at establishing a federated infrastructure to enable secure, high-performance cross-border access to distributed cancer datasets. At its core, UNCAN-Connect will provide a decentralized platform founded on federated data sovereignty, ensuring that sensitive patient data remains under local control while becoming securely discoverable across Europe. Furthermore the project places a heavy emphasis on technical interoperability by building seamless connections between diverse datasets and analytical tools.
The presentation gave a summary of the goals of the UNCAN.eu platform which aims to harmonise data access across all member nodes using strict governance rules, privacy-by-design frameworks, and full compliance with the European Health Data Space and GDPR standards. The platform’s capability to support complex data analytics and machine learning is actively validated through real-world clinical use cases across six major cancer types. EGI is leading the work on Federated & Scalable Infrastructure Services for the project which includes contributions from Cyfronet as an EGI Federation member.
