Goal & Scope
Digital Research Infrastructures (RIs) are essential drivers of modern science, but their growing energy demand and hardware lifecycle contribute significantly to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The GreenDIGIT Autumn School aims to equip students, early- and senior-stage researchers, and infrastructure operators with actionable tools, governance frameworks, and technical methodologies to lower the environmental footprint of digital services across the ESFRI ecosystem and European research landscape.
Focus & Key Themes
Over the course of two intensive days (09:00 – 18:00), participants will explore green computing through a hands-on, progressive learning flow:
- Policy & Governance: Understanding EU environmental regulations, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) principles, and the Digital Research Infrastructure Lifecycle Model (DRILM).
- Electricity Grid & Network Telemetry: Real-time tracking of power grid carbon/water footprints across Europe using open platforms (e.g., Wattnet) and wired network telemetry.
- Unified Infrastructure Monitoring: Energy metering across the continuum—IoT sensor networks, 5G/edge nodes, cloud infrastructures (via Scaphandre & RAPL metrology), and observability frameworks.
- Workload Brokering & Grid Flexibility: Energy-aware job scheduling, CPU/GPU dynamic frequency control (MetaCentrum/ThrottlePoint), and grid flexibility services.
- Practical Hands-on Lab: Hands-on deployment of notebook-based Virtual Research Environments (VREs), telemetry tracking, standardized reproducibility metadata export (RO-Crate objects), and energy-aware workflow orchestration.
