EOSC Gravity

Project Coordinated by the EOSC Association

The EU-funded EOSC Gravity project will support the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) partnership in providing a steady flow of reliable information on the status of the EOSC and in developing strategic recommendations to ensure its successful transition into a new governance and funding model post-2027. Through top-down and bottom-up approaches, the project will mobilise and grow the EOSC community by empowering stakeholders to evolve the EOSC Federation further. Moreover, it will co-fund actions which will support the creation of several EOSC Nodes across Europe. Through collaboration and dialogue, EOSC Gravity will build on past, present, and future EU and national investments in this area to help establish the EOSC as a federated infrastructure enabling the use and re-use of FAIR digital objects.

EGI Foundation Role in the Project

The EGI Foundation plays a multi-faceted role across key work packages.

  • EGI contributes expertise to WP1 (EOSC Coordination Framework), particularly in developing governance, funding models, and cost structures for EOSC’s future sustainability.
  • Crucially, EGI is deeply involved in WP4 and WP5 (Inter-Project Collaboration), helping lead and coordinate activities that foster synergy between Horizon Europe INFRAEOSC projects. This includes managing inter-project grants, facilitating technical alignment, and supporting joint communication efforts.
  • EGI also contributes to the overall WP9 (Project Coordination), ensuring effective project execution alongside the EOSC Association and consortium partners.

Relevance for EGI:

EOSC Gravity is highly relevant for EGI as it provides a strategic platform to directly shape the critical transition and long-term sustainability of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). Through its active participation in governance and funding discussions (WP1), EGI gains valuable insights and contributes to defining the future operational and financial models for EOSC, directly impacting the ecosystem where EGI operates. Furthermore, EGI’s leadership role in inter-project collaboration (WP4, WP5) strengthens its position as a central facilitator within the EOSC community. This enables EGI to foster essential synergies between projects, enhance service interoperability, and solidify its vital role in building and integrating the federated EOSC infrastructure.

Expected Results:

EGI’s involvement in EOSC Gravity is expected to yield significant results contributing to the project’s overall goals. Key outcomes include the development of robust recommendations for EOSC’s post-2027 governance and sustainable funding models, informed by EGI’s extensive operational experience. EGI’s efforts in inter-project collaboration will directly enable the creation of stronger synergies and technical alignment among Horizon Europe INFRAEOSC initiatives, accelerating the evolution of the EOSC Federation. Ultimately, EGI’s contributions will help establish a clearer pathway for EOSC’s long-term success, ensuring it becomes a permanent, impactful infrastructure supporting open sharing and FAIR research practices across Europe.
