PITHIA-NRF

PITHIA-NRF (Plasmasphere Ionosphere Thermosphere Integrated Research Environment and Access services: a Network of Research Facilities)
PITHIA-NRF aims at building a European distributed network that integrates observing facilities, data processing tools and prediction models dedicated to ionosphere, thermosphere and plasmasphere research.
EGI Foundation Role
The EGI Foundation supports the project in defining interoperability standards among the participating facilities, and with the broader landscape, including EOSC, and leads the design of sustainable services and activities that will last beyond the project. EGI members deliver a federated cloud environment with a cloud-based ‘EGI Notebooks’ service for the PITHIA e-science centre to offer a scalable and customisable web environment for writing workflows, exchanging workflows, accessing, analysis and sharing of data.
Expected Results
- Effective and convenient access to the best European research facilities (nodes) for the upper atmosphere.
- Integration tools that enable the establishment of a comprehensive Research Infrastructure.
- Through connection with EOSC, the e-Science centre of PITHIA-NRF provides long-term observational data, required for advancing our knowledge in the Ionospheric, Thermospheric and Plasmaspheric research domain.
- Organised and systematic training on the use of observing facilities and of the integration tools.
- Create a European distributed RI that will provide a range of research support services to the upper atmosphere research community.
PITHIA e-Science Centre
PITHIA-NRF has launched the e-Science Centre, the project’s central integration tool for data, models, and scientific services. The PITHIA e-Science Centre is a platform that provides centralised access to datasets and models associated with the upper atmosphere research community. Users can easily access, discover, reuse, and register their own Data Collections, Static Datasets and Workflows.
EGI facilitates the establishment of interoperability standards among participating facilities and within the broader context, including EOSC. EGI leads the development of sustainable services and activities that will endure beyond the project’s duration. Additionally, the EGI Federated Cloud member IN2P3-IRES provides PITHIA-NRF essential cloud computing services, with 80 virtual CPU cores and 10 TB of online storage to run the e-Science Centre.
