RAISEARTH
RAISEARTH will establish the first European research infrastructure offering end-to-end services across the Sun–Earth chain, supporting frontier research in heliophysics and space weather. Its objective is to provide transnational and virtual access to a service-ready infrastructure that integrates experimental facilities, harmonised data services, prediction models, and AI-enabled tools. Building on landmark projects such as EISCAT, LOFAR, PITHIA-NRF, and the VSWMC, RAISE introduces two innovations: full-chain integration from solar activity to ionospheric/thermospheric responses, and an AI-powered eScience Centre delivering services for event detection, semantic discovery, quality control, and forecasting.
RAISEARTH will deliver Transnational Access to instruments (such as radars, ionosondes, GNSS arrays, magnetometers, radio telescopes), and Virtual Access to FAIR datasets, event catalogues, and model outputs spanning the Sun–Earth system. The eScience Centre will provide AI-enhanced services, including automated event detection, forecasting, semantic search, data curation, and user-friendly ML workspaces. A strong training and innovation programme—schools, workshops, hackathons, and ad hoc support—will equip researchers with advanced skills in data stewardship and AI.
The methodology is based on distributed nodes connected via common standards and FAIR data pipelines, ensuring interoperability with the European Open Science Cloud and alignment with global frameworks (ESA SSA and VO). Services will be operational from project start, while new innovations are phased in sustainably.
RAISEARTH addresses the Horizon Europe Research Infrastructures Work Programme (SERV-04) by providing immediate transnational and virtual access, enhancing data exploitation with AI, and strengthening Europe’s leadership in heliophysics. It enables cross-disciplinary frontier research, maximises the use of European facilities, and builds capacity in line with ESFRI and EOSC priorities.
EGI Foundation role in the project:
EGI will contribute to the design of the e-Science Center extensions, and will operate and support the e-Science Centre.
Relevance for EGI:
Participating in RAISEARTH directly advances key priorities of the EGI Federation Strategy 2026–2030:
- Powering the AI-Ready Compute-Data Continuum: Supporting RAISEARTH’s AI-powered eScience Center, prediction models, and ML workspaces puts into practice EGI’s strategic goal to process data seamlessly close to its source across distributed compute, cloud, and AI-ready infrastructure.
- Strengthening EOSC Federation Leadership: Delivering core federating capabilities (AAAI, monitoring, helpdesk, and more) for RAISEARTH reinforces EGI’s role as the trusted, sovereign compute layer and federated core for the European Open Science Cloud and the EOSC EU Node.
- Advancing ESFRI & Landmark RIs Integration: Integrating landmark European research infrastructures (such as EISCAT and LOFAR) with EOSC-compliant FAIR data pipelines directly fulfills EGI’s strategic mandate to serve major ESFRI research infrastructures.
Expected results:
- Unified Sun–Earth Infrastructure: Establishment of Europe’s first integrated end-to-end research infrastructure linking solar, interplanetary, magnetospheric, ionospheric, and thermospheric facilities.
- Transnational & Virtual Access: Seamless access to key observational instruments (radars, radio telescopes, magnetometers, GNSS arrays) and FAIR-compliant data, catalogues, and prediction models across Europe.
- AI-Powered eScience Centre: Operational deployment of AI-enhanced capabilities delivering automated space-weather event detection, semantic data discovery, automated curation, and customizable machine-learning workspaces.
- Interoperable & EOSC-Integrated Services: Standardized workflows and FAIR pipelines fully aligned and integrated with the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and global frameworks (e.g., ESA SSA, Virtual Observatories).
- Cross-Disciplinary Capacity & Training: Enhanced scientific skills and workforce development in heliophysics, space weather, AI applications, and FAIR data stewardship through dedicated summer schools, workshops, hackathons, and support programs.
