SoBigData IP

SoBigData is a pan‐European RI dedicated to social mining and big data analytics. The RI serves as a dynamic nexus for innovative research, offering a fully open and collaborative environment where experts from computer science, social sciences, humanities, and related fields can leverage cutting‐edge tools and advanced methodologies. Building on the solid technological foundations validated during the preparatory phase, the infrastructure is now moving toward a sustainable future, focusing on broader accessibility and an improved user experience.
The Implementation Phase of the SoBigData RI focuses on putting into action the plans developed during its preparatory stage. During this phase, technological components, tools, and services are refined and integrated for the public use. It also involves the support to establishing the ERIC and make it operational. More specifically, SoBigData IP has a central objective to integrate new services and enhance the way users interact with the RI, making services and facilities easier to navigate and use, while fostering active engagement across diverse communities, including researchers, industry, policymakers, and citizens. By consolidating access policies and expanding participation opportunities, SoBigData IP aims to create a more inclusive and impactful ecosystem.
At the same time, the SoBigData IP is strengthening the RI pan-European relevance by aligning closely with EOSC and European Data Spaces, promoting interoperability, and supporting cross-border collaboration. This integration reinforces Europe’s research capacity and enables evidence-based policymaking. Finally, the pathway to establishing SoBigData as an ERIC is underway. Guided by the SoBigData IP, the RI is consolidating its governance, legal, and financial frameworks to ensure long-term sustainability. This transition will secure SoBigData’s position as a stable, trusted, and high-impact research infrastructure within the European landscape.

EGI Foundation role in the project:
- Contribute to the establishing of the Dutch node, supporting the integration of the required infrastructure components, services, and operational procedures.
- Support the maintenance, reliability, and operational availability of the EGI Notebooks service. This includes monitoring service performance, managing upgrades and security updates, troubleshooting incidents, ensuring compliance with service-level objectives, and contributing to the continuous improvement of the service to provide a stable and user-friendly environment for researchers and scientific communities.
Expected results:
The project aims to:
- Contribute to the implementation of SoBigData RI for analysing social data combined with user-driven research environments and operational ethical and legal standards
- Improve user experience and access by making RI services, resources and tools easier to access, navigate, and use
- Enhance engagement and participation among researchers, industry, policymakers, and citizens
- Expand and consolidate access policies to create a more inclusive and impactful research ecosystem
- Strengthen European integration by aligning with EOSC and European Data Spaces
- Promote interoperability and cross-border collaboration to enhance Europe’s research and innovation capacity
- Support evidence-based policy making through access to data, services, and expertise
- Prepare the ground for the transition of SoBigData RI into an ERIC
- Ensure long-term sustainability and impact of SoBigData as a trusted European research infrastructure
Relevance for EGI:
Strengthen the collaboration with the pan‐European RI dedicated to Social Mining and Big Data Analytics. The initiative will also provide an opportunity to better understand the evolving requirements of the social sciences and humanities research domains, contributing to the further evolution of EGI’s service portfolio.
