The EGI Federation is a flagship international publicly funded e-infrastructure providing advanced computing and data services for research and innovation.
EGI brings together hundreds of data and compute centres in Europe and has been delivering unprecedented data analysis capabilities to more than 100,000 researchers organised in hundreds of virtual organisations, covering many scientific disciplines.
EGI’s mission is to create and deliver open solutions for science and research infrastructures by federating digital capabilities, resources and expertise between communities and across national boundaries.
The EGI Foundation coordinates the EGI Federation on behalf of the participants of the EGI Council: national e-infrastructures and European Intergovernmental Research Organisations (EIROs). The EGI Foundation, headquartered in the Science Park in Amsterdam, is a not-for-profit organisation established in 2010 under Dutch law. The team currently consists of 54 people located across several European countries.
Job Summary
This is a senior leadership position combining strategy, partnerships, and oversight, aimed at shaping the future of a major European research infrastructure organisation and contributing to the evolution of scientific computing and data-driven research in Europe.
The primary objectives of the Director are to further develop and implement the future EGI Foundation strategy, together with the EGI Council and to lay the groundwork for a long-term sustainability of the EGI Federation.
Purpose and Responsibilities
- Guide the development and implementation of the EGI Federation strategy
- Oversee and manage the human resources within the EGI Foundation.
- Ensure financial oversight, policy implementation, and organisational planning.
- Manage reporting processes to the EGI Council and Executive Board, including the annual activity plan.
- Establish and maintain strategic relationships with existing and new user communities within Europe and other strategic e-infrastructures.
- Represent the organisation externally, particularly within the European landscape and strengthen its visibility and collaborations.
- Hold overall responsibility for the financial management of the organisation.
Required Skills & Profile
Personal
- University education with relevant professional experience.
- Ability to travel frequently within Europe and occasionally worldwide.
- Excellent English communication skills, both written and oral, including formal presentations.
- Ability to function well under stress and to prioritise work to meet conflicting deadlines.
- Ability to work with multicultural and interdisciplinary teams
- Commitment to create and maintain a pleasant, safe and healthy internal working environment.
Professional
- Good knowledge of the European infrastructure landscape and science stakeholders
- Proven management and leadership experience, ideally in research or e-infrastructure environments, including strategic planning and executive team leadership skills.
- Skilled in strategy development, stakeholder engagement, and negotiation within the EGI Foundation, the EGI collaboration and with external partners
- Experience in engagement and representation towards public funding bodies, such as national agencies and the European Commission.
- Experience managing distributed international teams and EU-funded projects.
- Excellent communication skills in English and ability to work across cultures.
- Proven experience in project management of EU-funded or other externally funded projects.
- Ability to gather and analyse European and International developments and translate them into policy proposals.
- Ability to represent the organisation at conferences, symposia and meetings, promoting its objectives, services and relevant projects.
- Responsibility for the development, expansion and maintenance of the external relationships.
Offer
- This is a full-time (~40 hours per week) position based in Amsterdam.
- Remote working arrangements can be considered.
- The position is offered for an initial fixed-term period of 60 months and can be renewed by Council decision. Incorporation is expected no later than January 1st, 2028, with an earlier date possible subject to agreement.
- Depending on experience, for an employee working in the Netherlands, the gross salary for this position will be in the range of € 12.000 per month, with additional holiday (8% annual gross) and end-of-year (5% annual gross) bonuses. For employees stationed outside the Netherlands, the salary will be determined by applying the country-specific coefficient correction, and bonuses and benefits will be aligned with the local regulations of the respective country.
- With a majority of the staff operating from various locations in Europe, EGI Foundation maintains payrolls in multiple countries. In line with this approach, specific contract terms are negotiated based on the employee’s country of residence.
