The International Symposium on Open Science Clouds 2025 (ISOSC 2025) took place from 2–4 September 2025 at the Nanjing University Suzhou Campus, China. Organised by the Global Open Science Cloud (GOSC) International Programme Office, the symposium gathered global leaders, research infrastructures, and technology providers to explore how Open Science Clouds can transform research in the era of AI.

The conference focused on:

  • Transforming Open Science Clouds in the AI era: exploring how AI is reshaping global open science and advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Showcasing SDG-driven use cases: presenting success stories from across the world.
  • Strengthening global collaboration: aligning efforts with the UN International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD, 2024–2033).

Advanced Computing Needs of Data-Intensive Science

A highlight of the symposium was the presentation by Tiziana Ferrari, Director of the EGI Foundation, titled “Advanced Computing Needs of Data-Intensive Science: EGI Response and Its Contribution to EOSC.”

Her talk showcased how the EGI Federation, Europe’s largest federated digital infrastructure, is addressing the challenges of data-intensive science by providing advanced computing, AI-driven services, and international collaboration. She highlighted EGI’s contributions to the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and global open science, with examples such as WeNMR and the CoastPredict initiative. The message was clear: the future of science depends on AI, advanced computing, and global collaboration. The full presentation is available on Zenodo.

The symposium concluded with a forward-looking discussion on the future of GOSC. A White Paper is now in preparation, envisioning the transition “from Open Science to Open Partnership.” It calls for stronger international cooperation, inclusiveness, and sustainability. EGI, together with CNIC (Computer Network Information Center, CAS) and CBAS (International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals), reaffirmed their commitment to sustain global cooperation and support international science—even in a global climate that does not always favour intercontinental efforts.

Enabling the Global Open Science Cloud

EGI’s contribution to GOSC since 2021 was also acknowledged during the event. From the very beginning, EGI has been actively involved in shaping GOSC: contributing to two white papers—on the landscape study of global science clouds and on the vision and mission of GOSC; supporting pilots to integrate CSTCloud with the EGI Federation; and enabling EISCAT and WeNMR use cases to access resources from China for their collaborations. This continuous engagement has been instrumental in building trust, interoperability, and tangible outcomes for global science.

Reflecting on the event, Yin Chen, Senior Community Support Officer at the EGI Foundation, noted: “I am happy to see the progress made and to have contributed to the discussions on the future of collaboration. GOSC has moved from vision to action, and EGI will continue to play its part in making global Open Science a reality.”
