EGI Node enters production as part of the EOSC Federation
The EGI Node is moving into production, making scalable compute, storage, data management and advanced digital research services available through the EOSC Federation and opening new opportunities for cross-border and cross-disciplinary research.
8 October 2026 — The EGI Node has entered production as part of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Federation, marking the transition from developing and prototyping the Node to delivering operational services and resources for researchers. This moment marks the culmination of a decade of European, national and organisational investment in the development of EOSC.
The Node brings together 28 participating organisations from the EGI Federation and contributes scalable compute, storage, data management and advanced digital research services for data-intensive science. Through the Federation, these resources can be discovered and used alongside complementary capabilities provided by other EOSC Nodes across Europe.
The EOSC Federation as a whole will mark the entrance into its operational phase at the EOSC Symposium 2026 in Florence on 14–16 October. The EOSC EU Node and the Federation’s 27 national, thematic and e-infrastructure Nodes—supported by 218 European research organisations—are creating a distributed European research environment in which data, services and computing resources can be used across institutional, disciplinary and national boundaries. This month’s transition into operations ushers in a growth phase for the Federation that will see an expansion of Nodes, data and services year over year.
From infrastructure to science
The Federation is designed to make high-quality research data and services easier to find, access and reuse while supporting FAIR and open science, provenance, security and trusted access. Across EOSC, ongoing scientific use cases already span areas including climate and marine science, infectious-disease surveillance, cancer research, advanced imaging and AI-supported discovery.
The EGI Node is contributing to research in a range of scientific areas through such examples as AI validation on sensitive health data with the BBMRI Node, or cross-Node reproducibility of workflows with the CERN Node.
Addressing complex challenges, from validating marine sensor data and assessing ocean carbon sequestration to protecting health data privacy, requires seamless, scalable computational power and cutting-edge technologies. The EGI Node increases the valorisation and reuse of research data by enabling interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary data exploitation through access to large datasets, secure ISO27001-certified compute, high-end GPUs, and integrated workflow environments like Galaxy, REANA, and federated Large Language Models. By connecting across EOSC Nodes, researchers can execute cross-site AI and machine learning pipelines, validate sensitive medical models in compliant enclaves, and verify scientific workflows with full cross-Node reproducibility.
A growing European research capability
EOSC embodies an important European approach to research-data governance designed to counter global pressures on European data sovereignty. This is achieved through distributed ownership, institutional autonomy, interoperability and cooperation under shared rules.
Within this proven framework, the EGI Node will continue to improve its services for researchers, expand the resources available through the Federation and develop new connections with scientific communities and other Nodes.
“Entering production moves the EGI Node from preparation to delivery, offering researchers immediate access to advanced technologies for large-scale data hosting and processing, high-performance GPUs, secure ISO27001 compute, and workflow platforms. Collaborating within the EOSC Federation transforms these resources into a shared engine for data-intensive, transnational science that strengthens European data sovereignty.” - Diego Scardaci, EOSC Node Coordinator at the EGI Foundation

About the EGI Node
Operated by the EGI Foundation on behalf of the EGI Federation, the Node provides scalable compute, storage, data management and advanced digital research services for data-intensive science. It aspires to deliver EOSC Core and Federating Capabilities including AAI, catalogue, monitoring, accounting, helpdesk and application deployment management, while supporting multi-node use cases in reproducible workflows, AI, sensitive data analysis, machine learning and federated LLM services.
About EOSC
The European Open Science Cloud is a federated European environment for research data and services. It connects distributed national, thematic and infrastructure resources through common technical and governance arrangements, enabling researchers to access and reuse data and services across institutional and national boundaries.
