EGI congratulates the <a href="http://www.virgo-gw.eu/#home" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Virgo collaboration</a>&nbsp;for their contribution to the 2017 <a href="https://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/physics/laureates/2017/press.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Nobel Prize in physics</a> awarded for the observation of gravitational waves.
The Virgo detector is located in Italy, within the site of the <a href="http://www.ego-gw.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">European Gravitational Observatory</a> (EGO) and was designed to discover&nbsp;gravitational waves &#8211;&nbsp;ripples in the fabric of spacetime &#8211; predicted by Einstein’s&nbsp;general theory of relativity. The <a href="https://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.116.061102" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">first detection</a> was announced by the <a href="http://www.virgo-gw.eu/#home" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Virgo collaboration</a> and the <a href="http://www.ligo.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">LIGO collaboration</a> in February 2016. The discovery opened a new window of looking at the universe.
Virgo is a European collaboration of scientific institutions from six countries:&nbsp;Italy, France, the&nbsp;Netherlands,&nbsp;Poland, Hungary and Spain.
