EOSC Marine

EOSC Marine
The EOSC-Marine project provides the framework for developing and integrating the current marine thematic candidate into the fully operational EOSC Node | European Digital Twin Ocean within the EOSC Federation. It delivers an EOSC-compliant digital environment featuring core computing capabilities, including Authentication, Authorisation and Accounting (AAA), Research Catalogues, Application Workflows, Monitoring, and Helpdesk.
By coupling multidisciplinary datasets, from in-situ and Earth observations, with advanced models and analytical tools, the Node serves as a primary response to the EC Mission ‘Restoring our Ocean and Waters by 2030’. The project builds directly upon the achievements of Blue-Cloud 2026 and the EDITO programme. This synergy enables the Node to evolve into the specific EDITO component that delivers FAIR open data and analytical services, instrumental for research into the ocean, European seas, coastal, and inland waters, to the entire EOSC Federation.
These capabilities will be validated through key aquatic science use cases released within the Node. Furthermore, the project will manage the onboarding of new third-party services, contributing valuable recommendations to the EOSC enrolment processes. Finally, EOSC-Marine will advance the governance and sustainability of the Node in strict alignment with the EOSC Federation Handbook, ensuring it is a fully operational pillar fit for cross-node data and service exchange.
EGI Foundation role in the project:
As a partner in the consortium delivering EOSC Node services, EGI provides technical leadership and core services across the project. Drawing on its expertise, including co-chairing the EOSC Association Technical and Semantic Interoperability Task Force, EGI supports the overall integration of FAIR data, complex application workflows, and interoperability frameworks to deliver robust digital infrastructure for the marine research community.
In its primary leadership role, EGI leads Task 3.2 (Operation and Evolution of Generic Services), overseeing the management, optimization, and scaling of foundational EOSC Marine services. In this role, EGI will coordinate and contribute to:
- Enhancing Interactive Notebooks, scientific data analytics tools, and File Sync & Share platforms for interactive marine science workloads.
- Enriching Research Catalogues to ensure their metadata directly feeds into the broader EOSC Knowledge Graph, enabling comprehensive discovery and publishing of marine research outputs.
- Addressing software environment drift and improving reproducibility by exploring shared distribution mechanisms like CVMFS.
- Developing automated CI/CD pipelines paired with AI-assisted vetting tools that identify vulnerabilities or disruptive software changes prior to deployment.
Beyond generic service delivery, EGI contributes technical capabilities across several partner-led tasks, including:
- Operating and evolving AAAI (Authentication, Authorisation, and Accounting Infrastructure), automated monitoring, and usage accounting aligned with EOSC Federation specifications (Task 3.1).
- Supporting microservices-based application workflows and predictive modeling for marine science, enabling compute-intensive and hardware-accelerated workloads across multi-cloud and PaaS environments in support of the Copernicus Marine Service and the European Digital Twin of the Ocean (Task 3.3).
- Assisting thematic service teams with containerisation, technical validation, and seamless deployment into the EOSC Marine Node (Task 3.5).
- Supporting outreach campaigns, open-access publishing, and broader community engagement (Task 7.1).
Expected results:
The project aims to:
- Operational EOSC Marine Node: A fully integrated thematic node delivering FAIR data and analytics services for the European Digital Twin Ocean (EDITO).
- FAIR Data & Analytics Workflows: Streamlined access to multidisciplinary ocean and inland waters data linked with interactive notebooks and cloud computing.
- EOSC Knowledge Graph Alignment: Standardized research catalogues that directly feed marine metadata into the broader EOSC discovery system.
- Validated Science Use Cases: Demonstrable aquatic research applications supporting the EC Mission “Restoring our Ocean and Waters by 2030”.
- Service Onboarding Framework: Clear onboarding pipelines for third-party tools, providing input to refine EOSC Federation enrolment rules.
- Reproducible & Secure Software: Automated CI/CD pipelines, CVMFS distribution, and AI-assisted security checks to ensure software stability and reproducibility.
- Federated Governance Model: A sustainable operating model aligned with the EOSC Federation Handbook for cross-node data exchange
Relevance for EGI:
- Realizing the AI-Ready Compute-Data Continuum: By delivering integrated notebooks, high-performance scientific analytics, and microservice workflows, the project puts into practice EGI’s strategic goal to process data seamlessly close to its source across distributed compute, cloud, and hardware-accelerated environments.
- Strengthening EOSC Node & Federation Leadership: As a partner in delivering EOSC EU Node services, EGI operates core federating capabilities (such as AAAI, monitoring, and accounting), solidifying its role as the trusted, sovereign compute layer and federated core for the European Open Science Cloud.
- Driving FAIR Data & Cross-Domain Interoperability: Drawing on its co-leadership in the EOSC Association Interoperability Task Force, EGI aligns marine research catalogues with the EOSC Knowledge Graph. This enforces strict adherence to the EOSC Interoperability Framework and FAIR principles across major European initiatives like the Copernicus Marine Service and the Digital Twin of the Ocean.
- Advancing Software Reproducibility & AI-Assisted Operations: Exploring shared distribution channels like CVMFS, alongside automated CI/CD pipelines and AI-assisted software vetting, directly reflects EGI’s commitment to building a resilient, sustainable innovation ecosystem that ensures long-term research reproducibility.
