AI4Europe wraps Up, AI-on-Demand Moves Forward

After three years of collaborative effort, AI4Europe has successfully delivered a user-friendly platform that brings together AI resources, tools, datasets, and services for the European research and innovation community. The project’s main objective was to create a central hub where users can easily find, share, and reuse AI assets. This hub is the AI-on-Demand platform, now actively used by researchers, developers, and organisations seeking a trustworthy entry point into Europe’s growing AI ecosystem.

The platform consolidates a rich collection of content: trained models, tools, algorithms, datasets, training materials, and documentation. By bringing these resources together in a single space, AI4Europe increases the visibility of ongoing AI work across Europe and significantly reduces fragmentation for both academic and innovation users.

Building on its long-standing experience in service provisioning and support to research communities, EGI previously contributed to the preparatory PrePAI project, which laid the foundation for the AI-on-Demand vision. In AI4Europe, we helped integrate technical tools, shape governance, strengthen sustainability, and drive community engagement.

One of EGI’s major contributions was the design and implementation of the platform’s Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure (AAI) through EGI Check-in. This AAI enables seamless single sign-on, integrates identities from academic and research institutions, and supports detailed user and community management. It provides a secure, trusted environment for sharing datasets, models, and tools, ensuring controlled access to sensitive or restricted resources while maintaining compliance with European security and data protection standards.

AI-on-Demand directly supports broader European objectives: strengthening collaboration among AI research and innovation communities, enabling reproducible research, and building shared digital foundations for emerging AI initiatives. Its technical architecture and participatory mechanisms now serve as a cornerstone for follow-up projects such as Deploy AI, which will advance large-scale AI development and deployment within Europe’s innovation and industrial ecosystem.

For EGI, the AI4Europe project reaffirms its role as a provider of reliable, federated services for research and innovation. The expertise gained in supporting the platform, particularly its AAI, will help shape future European AI infrastructures.
