EGI welcomes RI-SCALE Partners at the Kickoff meeting at Amsterdam Science Park

The EGI Foundation is proud to coordinate and host the official kickoff meeting of RI-SCALE, a newly launched EU-funded project that brings together 29 partners across Europe to tackle challenges in research data exploitation. The project officially started on March 1, 2025, and will run until February 2028. Over the next three years, RI-SCALE will develop cutting-edge Data Exploitation Platforms (DEPs) to enhance the accessibility, usability, and impact of research data across multiple scientific domains.

Kickoff Meeting in Amsterdam

The project was officially launched during a Kickoff Meeting at EGI’s headquarters in Amsterdam Science Park from March 11 to 13, 2025. This gathering marks the beginning of a collaborative effort to co-design and validate AI-ready platforms, integrating advanced data analytics, machine learning models, and scalable computational frameworks to unlock the full potential of research infrastructures’ datasets.

EGI’s Central Role in RI-SCALE

As the coordinator of RI-SCALE, EGI plays a key role in ensuring the project’s success:

  • Project Management: Leading WP1 to oversee administrative, financial, and ethical compliance across 29 partners.
  • Trusted Data Management: Driving the development of trusted data replication and lifecycle management solutions (WP2), aligning RI datasets with cloud and HPC infrastructures while focusing on energy efficiency.
  • Scalable AI Integration: Facilitating the integration of AI-ready frameworks into DEPs (WP3) to support advanced data processing for environmental and biomedical RIs.
  • Secure & Interoperable Access: Designing secure identity, authentication, and authorisation solutions (WP4) for seamless access across RIs, e-infrastructures, and European Data Spaces.
  • Validation & Deployment: Contributing to co-design and validation efforts (WP5) to ensure DEP prototypes align with scientific and technical needs.
  • Dissemination & Impact: Leading communication, engagement, exploitation and capacity-building efforts (WP6) to drive adoption of DEP technologies.

Why RI-SCALE Matters

Research Infrastructures (RIs) generate vast amounts of data, but barriers such as limited computational resources and interoperability challenges hinder their reuse and impact. RI-SCALE’s Data Exploitation Platforms will bridge this gap, providing scalable, AI-ready solutions that empower researchers in fields such as climate science, atmospheric physics, biobanking, and biomedical imaging.
