Can you explain what Belnet is?

Belnet has been the trusted IT partner for research, education, and government in Belgium for more than 30 years. Since 1993, Belnet has been providing high-quality, innovative network infrastructure and related services to Belgian universities, university colleges, research institutions, and public authorities. In doing so, we contribute to the development of the knowledge and information society.

Our ultra-high-performance network enables the transfer of massive volumes of data and fosters national and international collaboration in research and education. In addition, Belnet offers innovative services in the areas of connectivity, cybersecurity, cloud, and mobility. Thanks to our expertise, unique position, and economies of scale, we are able to meet the specific needs of more than 250 member organisations, representing over 833,000 end users.

Belnet employs around 80 people and operates as a state service with separate management under the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office (BELSPO). More information is available at www.belnet.be.

What is the relationship with EGI?

Belnet represents Belgium in the EGI Council on behalf of the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office (BELSPO).

Why do you think it’s important to be at EGI2026?

As Belgium’s representative in the EGI Council, Belnet acts as the bridge between the EGI Federation and the Belgian research community. Our goal is to ensure that the voice of Belgian researchers is heard at the European level while creating new opportunities for collaboration and innovation. We also facilitate access for the Belgian research community to the EGI infrastructure and its services.
