EGI-ACE

Advanced Computing for EOSC.

EGI-ACE is a 30-month project coordinated by the EGI Foundation with a mission to empower researchers from all disciplines to collaborate in data- and compute-intensive research through free-at-point-of-use services.

EGI-ACE receives funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101017567.

Overview

EGI-ACE’s main objective is to implement the Compute Platform of the European Open Science Cloud and contribute to the EOSC Data Commons by delivering integrated computing, platforms, data spaces and tools as an integrated solution that is aligned with major European cloud federation projects and HPC initiatives.

EGI-ACE is a 30-month project coordinated by the EGI Foundation with a mission to empower researchers from all disciplines to collaborate in data- and compute-intensive research through free-at-point-of-use services.

  • EGI-ACE builds on  the operational capacity and expertise of the EGI Federation;
  • results of the EOSC-hub project;
  • co-design and requirement gathering activities;
  • data and applications from research infrastructures and collaborations.

The consortium of the project builds on the expertise and assets of the EGI federation members, key research communities, data providers and collaborating initiatives.

Over 30 months, the project is expected to provide more than 82 Millions CPU hours, 250 thousand GPU hours for data processing and analytics, and 45 PB/month for hosting and exploiting research data.

Call for Use Cases

With this call for use cases, the EGI-ACE project offers individual researchers, national and international research projects, communities and infrastructures access to infrastructure and platform services, dedicated user support and training.

Key Exploitable results

EOSC Compute Platform

The EOSC Compute Platform is a distributed computing environment integrated with EOSC Exchange. The Platform is built on a hybrid infrastructure composed of cloud computing resources, High-throughput computing (HTC) sites and High-Performance Computing (HPC) centres. The Platform and associated funding provides free at the point of use computing and storage resources along with user support and training for researchers and scientific projects. The Platform supports diverse, distributed data processing and analysis use cases.

EGI-ACE KER 1

Value for Users

  • Having a broad and growing spectrum of types of compute resources behind a single interface (EGI-ACE Open Call) and single allocation process
  • Streamlined support and communication through the use case shepherds and with access to experts for consultancy to select the most suitable types and combination of compute and related platform/data services to realise a use case
  • Build partnership with national providers for long-term usage of their compute resources
  • Free-at-point-of-use access to national and relevant international capacity

Value for Providers

  • A scalable resource allocation approach that considers local and European policies and the needs of national and international research communities
  • Simplified integration to EOSC (because of aggregating multiple providers behind a single service, because of the compute-oriented support given by the project)
  • Simplified order handling and customer relationship management (because of the first line CRM team that pre-analyses and brokers orders to best fitting providers, because of the shepherd who liaises with the use cases)
  • Being part of a compute community that advises each other on topics of shared interest (e.g. containers, green computing)
  • Working with like-minded compute centres on harmonised policies, protocols, approaches for service operation, architecture and funding
  • Co-funding by the EC to deliver relevant services across national borders

Project Governance

Project Governance & Management

Overview

The proposed structure of EGI-ACE governance and management represents three main challenges:

  • understanding the EOSC landscape (Project Management Board, Strategy foresight expert group),
  • provisioning of services to meet customer needs (Service Delivery and Support board), and
  • emphasising the importance of innovation management in project management (the Innovation manager is a member in all management boards/groups).
Support

The management structure for EGI-ACE will be supported by the relevant EGI boards that will have an advisory role to the where appropriate. Being the EGI Foundation the organization entrusted by the Council to run coordination functions for the EGI Federation, project support and management activities are run by the EGI Foundation. Consortium beneficiaries are involved through the project governance and management structures to set the strategy for the project and oversee its implementation.
